Digital signage is beginning to play a prominent part in improving revenues and driving sales for many businesses. There are several advantages to purchasing commercial LCD monitors over the residential, consumer models for the purpose of digital signage.

* One leading factor is that commercial grade screens, commercial LCD monitors are designed for constant use. Many can run for 15 hours at a time and some are even built to run for 24 hours, 7 days a week. Most have the necessary ports to control and command digital signage systems, and also support standard PC resolutions. Another advantage associated with professional flat screens designed for commercial use, is that they have heat dissipation plates, dust inflow filters, cooling fans, and electronics to adjust the screen’s brightness settings (depending on the amount of ambient light). This specific advantage is ideal for digital signage because it further minimizes the heat output. Several commercial LCD monitors incorporate protection against electro-magnetic interference, a higher refresh rate, as well as strengthened housing and power supplies. For your convenience, most of these units are controlled remotely. Additionally, the menu buttons can be locked out, deterring the public from disrupting pre-programmed settings.

In most cases, consumer grade monitors are only intended to run for only 4 to 8 hours a day. They are not built to manage the heavy duty cycles that come with digital signage. If residential monitors operate for a prolonged period of time, they increasingly become hotter, maximizing their likelihood for failure. Some of the less expensive consumer LCD monitors and plasma screens may also have image retention issues and burn-in problems when left on for an extended period of time. What’s more, many do not feature the cooling mechanisms that come standard on most commercial monitors. Additionally, consumer LCD models may lack essential inputs or ports needed for certain media players to work with them. Plus, many do not support most of the PC screen resolutions necessary for the digital signage to function. Several do not offer the option of displaying digital sign content in landscape and portrait orientation. Another important issue that may arise when using a consumer model in a commercial environment, is that anyone can touch the menu buttons and completely wreak havoc on your settings, creating chaos and disorder in your establishment. Also, the warranties on most residential monitors are voided, if it is discovered they have been purchased for and used in a commercial environment.

Digital signage solutions have been rapidly expanding among the business community; proving to be a better means of communicating with consumers than printed posters and traditional signs.
